Nightwatch - Rembrandt van Rijn

This baroque style painting was done in oil in 1642 by the Dutch master, Rembrandt Van Rijn, better known as Rembrandt. It is among the most famous paintings in the world and has suffered much abuse. It has been trimmed, scratched, and splashed with acid, yet has always been successfully restored.

The subject is the "The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch", a Militia Company under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, who commissioned the painting abt. 1639 and was hung in the banquet hall of the Musketeer's Meeting Hall in Amsterdam. The original work measures nearly 12' x 14'.
