Franklin Delano Roosevelt was married to Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a distant cousin - specifically, his fifth cousin one time removed. Before becoming First Lady of the United States, she had been a teacher, a radio announcer, and a writer. She was an active advocate for human rights, especially women's rights, the rights of the poor homeless, and the rights of African Americans. She was First Lady from 1933 to 1945, and from 1945 to 1952 she served as United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. She died in 1962 in New York.
