Mending the Flag

Norman Rockwell - Mending the Flag

Norman Rockwell's painting for the Literary Digest cover for May 27, 1922.

Like some other paintings done for the cover of Literary Digest, this one might have been done as an illustration for a story rather than a composition specifically devised to appear on a cover. It does not display the layout skills that Rockwell was beginning to utilize in his work for the Post, and, in this regard, it's worth noting that this painting postdates his first real masterpiece, "No Swimming" (p 107), by several months. From this we may deduce that the Post's editorial staff was giving him more room to experiment and stretch his wings.
