Norman Rockwell's painting for the Literary Digest published on March 1, 1919.
Unlike most of the covers Rockwell painted for The Saturday Evening Post and Country Gentleman, his covers for Literary Digest were never overtly humorous. Here he gives us a study of a wounded veteran recounting one of his more bloodcurdling war experiences for the benefit of an attentive audience. As is so often the case in Rockwell's work, the hands express as much as the face.
