Every good illustrator, and every good art editor, knows the audience at which any given publication is targeted. It is likely that when he painted this cover, Rockwell could be reasonably sure that many Literary Digest readers would find it easy to identify with this couple. There is nothing exceptional about it, but he demonstrates the ability to focus on the everyday, the familiar, which later provides the basis of his finest work.
