Residence of E.R. Jones

Residence of E. R. Jones

Created in 1881 by Paul Seifert, Dodgeville, Wisconsin, this painting is titled RESIDENCE OF MR. E. R. JONES.

The latest of these outstanding examples of American primitive watercolor, this winter scene is the only one from the Midwest. A selective emphasis on the chief features of the farm landscape results in a fine composition in which trees and fences impose a precise orderliness. The artist, Paul Seifert, was born in Dresden, Germany, and came to America after the Civil War; he worked not only as an artist but also as a taxidermist. He painted his farmscapes on colored papers, a device that permitted him to use color in an original way to highlight and shade the median hue of his background. Fine composition and precisionist detail distinguish a delightfully fresh watercolor.
