Prodigal Son Reclaimed

Prodigal Son Reclaimed

Originally created abt. 1820 by Mary Ann Willson, New York, this decorative print is titled PRODIGAL SON RECLAIMED.

While this watercolor was copied from a print source, the creative changing of natural elements to stylized forms and patterns has the effect of dramatizing the Biblical figures. Mary Ann Willson's paintings are among the best illustrations of works that transcend their inspiration. Her use of vivid color and flat form forecasts the work of the modern avant garde. Miss Willson lived with a Miss Burbage for several years on a farm in Greenville, N. Y. Miss Burbage ran the farm and Miss Willson painted watercolors which she sold to her neighbors for modest sums. Well in advance of her time she considered her own productions as small masterpieces.
