Polly Botsford and Her Children

The Polly Botsford mourning picture is an extraordinary composition in which bold stylized forms are effectively used to create a small masterpiece that presages aspects of modern painting. The church is reduced to the elements of its framework so that both its interior and exterior appearance are suggested in its triangular skeleton—the idea rather than the actuality of a church. The pointed arches are repeated in the form of the figures, cypresses and fence as well as in the stylized branches and leaves of the large and small willow. A fascinating perspective rapidly diminishing from left to right foreground emphasizes the tombs and mourning figures. Artist unknown.
