James and Sarah Tuttle

James and Sarah Tuttle

Created in 1836 by Joseph H. Davis, Strafford County, N.H., this decorative print is titled JAMES & SARAH TUTTLE.

Typical of the delightful sprightliness of his style is this portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle by Joseph H. Davis, who signed one of his watercolors "left-hand painter." Gay patterns and designs are blended into Davis’ compositions to give them an even staccato beat that dazzles the viewer more than does the likenesses of his subjects. Mr. Tuttle’s profession is emphasized in the pictured view of his sawmill outlined on the back wall by a green garland. The painted chairs and marbleized table are set on an exuberantly patterned carpet. The family cat, a Bible, and an arrangement of fruit resembling a still life, complete this small social history of a family. Individual portraits of other members were created by the same artist at their home in Strafford County, N.H.
