Easter Sunday

Also called "Easter Morning", Norman Rockwell painted this for the Saturday Evening Post Cover for May 16, 1959. Commentary: The view through the window in this painting is the same as the view from Rockwell's studio in Stockbridge. The mother in the painting is Rockwell's daughter-in-law, who-when asked to pose-pointed out that she was too young to be the mother of such a family. Although he was usually a stickler for accuracy about such things, Rockwell went ahead anyway and no one seems to have been bothered.

This print is an example of how rare some of Norman Rockwell's prints are. His studio burned in 1943 destroying many of his paintings and the only available prints to be found are the actual covers themselves, and so often in art books you'll see remnants of the mailing label, as shown here. Although this was painted after the fire, it appears the publisher had a difficult time finding a mint condition print to use for this publication.
