Norman Rockwell - A Helpless Case

Also called "Doctor and Doll", Norman Rockwell painted this Literary Digest Cover - January 13, 1923 edition. In this case, Rockwell did indeed paint a variation on this theme for the Post, although he waited six years to do so. If we compare the two works, we will find that the Post version is, as might be expected, more skillfully constructed; but this one still holds up because it has a distinctly realistic look to it. The little girl, with her over-sized umbrella, is especially well observed and is, perhaps, more convincing than her successor in the Post painting.
