Triple Self-Portrait
Norman Rockwell painted this for the Saturday Evening Post Cover for February 13, 1960. Commentary: This fascinating painting appeared on the cover of the Post issue that carried the first installment of Rockwell's memoirs. It was only to be expected that Rockwell would work an American eagle into the picture, but less predictable is the discovery that his favorite artists-represented by reproductions pinned to the canvas-would include Picasso and Van Gogh, along with Rembrandt and Durer. Curiously, the reflection from Rockwell's glasses make him seem sightless in the image we see in the mirror. The younger man sketched onto the canvas, by contrast, has eyes that are wide open and inquisitive.
