A Family Tree
Painted by Norman Rockwell, for the Saturday Evening Post Cover for October 24, 1959. Commentary: It was appropriate for Rockwell to paint an American family tree, and he certainly allowed his imagination to roam quite freely in his search for types that would symbolize his melting-pot theme. It may surprise some people to discover that Rockwell finds America's roots not at Plymouth Rock but, rather, on the shores of the Caribbean, it the swashbuckling world of buccaneers and captured Spanish beauties.
